The council has a dedicated team to make sure it complies with all relevant regulations and legislation with the remit of inspecting and auditing council assets.
West Somerset Council has more than 150 premises across the district – a huge geographical area – and these range from the authority’s HQ at West Somerset House in Williton, to harbours and seafront shelters. Some are directly managed, while others are leased.
These are all subject to individual inspection, testing and servicing, as specified under the various regulatory guidance documents, and approved codes of practice.
The council also undertakes audits and verifies its assets to cover its responsibilities with particular emphasis on asbestos, gas, electrical, Legionellosis and fire safety.
Fire risk assessments have been carried out at all relevant buildings, and will be reviewed in line with findings, making sure that any noted actions are dealt with.
The Council continues working towards achieving best practice as a responsible property owner and has allocated specific funding to make sure that compliance is achieved.
Cllr Martin Dewdney, Lead Member for the Environment, said: “It is vitally important that we make the health and safety of our residents our priority. We have done a great deal of work over recent months to inspect and audit the property that we own.
“I would like to reassure our residents, businesses and visitors that we take our role extremely seriously whether our buildings are under our direct control or leased to other parties.”
