Availability of Planning Application Files

Files of planning applications for West Somerset (excluding Exmoor National Park) are held by the Council from as far back as the late 1940s.  

These files are all available for viewing by the public upon request, subject to the format and location of the file, as follows:

2010 to date

On the Council's website.

Please note that it is an ongoing process to put older applications onto the website, going back from 2010.

1999 to 2010

In electronic version (PDF and TIFF).

No notice required to view a file.

To be viewed on a computer located in the Council's main reception in West Somerset House, Williton.

1983 to 1998

On paper only and located in the Council's depot.                

96 hours notice is required to view a file.

To be viewed in the Council's main reception in West Somerset House, Williton.

1974 to 1982 

On microfilm only and located in West Somerset House, Williton

48 hours notice is required to view a file.

To be viewed using a microfiche reader in the Council's main reception in West Somerset House, Williton.

Pre - 1974

On paper only and located in the Council's depot.                

Subject to availability and upon a written request.

To be viewed in the Council's main reception in West Somerset House, Williton.                      


Most of the documentation on a planning application file can be copied except drawings/plans and maps which are subject to copyright restrictions.  A copy of a drawing/plan or map can be made for current applications (ie, those that have not yet been decided), subject to the following copyright restriction:

"This copy has been made by or with the authority of West Somerset Council pursuant to Section 47 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 solely for the purpose of enabling the material to be inspected at a more convenient time or place.  Unless that Act provides a relevant exception of copyright, the copy must not be copied without the prior permission of the copyright owner". 

If you wish to have a copy of a drawing/plan or map for a decided application then you must obtain the written permission of the copyright owner.
