The Localism Act 2011, which received Royal Assent on the 15th November 2011, abolished the Infrastructure Planning Commission and transferred functions to the Planning Inspectorate. A National Infrastructure Directorate has been formed within the Planning Inspectorate to examine applications for nationally significant infrastructure projects and makes recommendations to the Secretary of State who is then the final decision-maker.
