West Somerset Joint Needs Assessment 2010
In 2010 NHS Somerset and Somerset County Council, with support from West Somerset Council and other organisations and agencies, undertook an analysis of health and social care within the district of West Somerset. This work follows on from a county-wide Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) produced in 2008 and to be updated in 2011. West Somerset Joint Needs Assessment (4.5mb pdf)
West Somerset Council covers 280 square miles of coast and countryside.
The population of the district is approximately 35,300 and it is estimated that 32.1 per cent of this population are at retirement age (60 years and 65 years for women and men respectively).
The figure is above the national and regional average.
It is predicted that the population in West Somerset will increase by 15.86 per cent over the next twenty five years (2006 – 2031).
The largest increase is expected in the 85+ age group which will increase by approximately 140 per cent.
In contrast, it is predicted that there will be decreases in the working age population within the area.
Around 4.25 per cent of the population is from a BME background compared to 4.92 per cent in Somerset, 6.86 per cent regionally and 15.3 per cent nationally.
