Access to Employment Fund

The Access to Employment Fund has been developed by West Somerset Council to help address some of the main barriers that prevent local residents accessing employment and training. The aim of the fund is to support individuals to access employment opportunities related to the EDF Energy Hinkley Point C project and associated developments.

What can the fund help with?

The Access to Employment Fund can help to cover the cost of the following:

  1. Transport costs associated with getting to and from the location of the training provision. This can include public transport and personal mileage
  2. Equipment and Work Wear i.e. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); respirators, protective gloves, protective clothing, protective footwear and eye protection required to take part in a training course

Eligibility Criteria

  1. The individual benefitting from the fund must be resident within West Somerset
  2. This Access to Employment Fund Form (and where applicable the Access to Employment Travel Reimbursement Form) must be completed by the training provider and the learner upon the learner successfully completing a training course and registering their details with the EDF Energy Employment Brokerage. It will be the responsibility of the training provider to pay for the cost initially. If the individual fails to complete the course then no payment will be paid to the provider. If the learner completes but does not achieve payment will still be made to the provider
  3. The training course must be linked to developing the skills required for potential job roles associated with the construction of Hinkley Point C and associated developments and job opportunities. This includes those on-site, off-site and other services. Pathways to employment activity will also be supported
  4. The Individual benefiting from the fund must be aged 17 or over and not in full time education
  5. Where the individual benefitting from the fund is in employment, their annual income must be less than £15,000 per annum to qualify for the fund
  6. Where the individual is in employment they must provide details of their employer. We may contact the employer to confirm employment
  7. The maximum amount that can be claimed per day to cover the cost of travel is £5.00. Millage can be claimed at 25 pence a mile up to the maximum daily amount and can only be claimed from the individual’s home address to the location of the training
  8. Where the costs associated with transport are being claimed the Access to Employment Travel Reimbursement Form must be completed in addition to the Access to Employment Fund Form
  9. Maximum claims must not generally exceed £200 per learner. However we are happy to discuss applications on case by case basis
