Small and medium size businesses in West Somerset that have been hit hard by the severe flooding may qualify for extra help to get them back on their feet.
Repair and Renew Grant
The Repair and Renew Grant provides flood affected homes and business premises with up to £5,000 of grant funding to establish flood resilience measures to reduce the risk of future flooding and/or minimise the impact of future flooding. All properties flooded between the 1 December 2013 and 31 March 2014 are eligible for support.
Please complete the necessary application form available under Related Documents on this page and return to Julie Harcombe, Taunton Deane Borough Council, Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton, TA1 1HE.
Some households/businesses have been reluctant to submit claims for the Repair and Renew grant, fearing that an application/claim will result in increases in future insurance premiums/excesses.
Please see the GOV.UK website to view a letter from the Director General of the Association of British Insurers allaying such concerns and encouraging the take up of this grant to improve resilience against future flooding.
If you have any questions regarding your eligibility please call 01823 356559, where your call will be logged and passed on to the necessary department.
Temporary Reduction in Rateable Value
If your business premises have been damaged by severe flooding, you may be entitled to a temporary reduction in your rateable value. This will reduce the amount of tax you pay while you get your property back in business.
The VOA is working to identify and assess business property that has been damaged in areas hit by severe flooding, to ensure that those affected are not paying tax on a property that cannot be used.
Should you need to discuss the details, the VOA can be contacted on 03000 501 501. Each case will need to be considered on its own merits.
