Our Place

Our Place   My Community Rights   Brought to you by locality

Our Place – A project to support employment and skills in the community. Giving communities more power over the way in which local services are delivered

Extra funding to support communities in West Somerset to find work, training and development opportunities has been secured through the Our Place programme, which aims to bring residents, community and voluntary organisations together to focus on key concerns locally and transform the way related services are delivered.

The additional £10,000 secured will allow for a number of essential projects to be developed in the District to support people on their journey towards employment or training and address key obstacles.

Over the coming months 23 partner organisations will work together to develop a number of projects, including:

  • Employment Hubs in Watchet and Williton
  • A Peer Mentoring Programme
  • A Skills Swap Brokerage; where community members can swap their skills to support other residents in their community
  • A Passport to Employment; a progressive employability skills programme which will allow for individuals to develop the skills required by employers

We are extremely keen for members of the community to help shape the above and subsequent projects related to the Our Place Programme.

If you are interested in becoming part of the Our Place programme and would like to contribute to the development of these projects please contact Emily Wishart, Employment and Skills Outreach Worker on 01984 635221.

Partner organisations involved in the project include: Careers South West, CLOWNS West Somerset, Engage West Somerset, Home Start West Somerset, In the Mix Youth Project, Jobcentre Plus, Magna West Somerset, Minehead Development Trust, Minehead Eye, Pluss, Somerset Rural Youth Project, Somerset County Council, Somerset Skills & Learning, St Loyes Foundation, Restore Trust, Taunton Deane Borough Council, The Sanctuary Watchet, Watchet Town Council, West Somerset Advice Bureau, West Somerset Children’s Centre, West Somerset College and West Somerset Council.

West Somerset Our Place has received grant support through the Our Place programme run by Locality, the Local Government Association, Community Development Foundation and other partners, funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Locality is the leading nationwide network of community enterprises, development trusts, settlements and social action centres. Locality provides advice, support and grants for the Community Rights, Neighbourhood Planning and Our Place programmes, and train Community Organisers across England. Locality is also campaigning to improve public service delivery, making them #localbydefault.

Locality, in partnership with the Local Government Association and delivery associates such as the Community Development Foundation are running the Our Place programme. Find out more on their website.
