Somerset West Private Sector Housing Partnership

Taunton Deane, Sedgemoor District Council and West Somerset Council work in partnership to deliver grants, loans, enforcement, energy efficiency and advice services in private sector housing.

These pages give advice and information on all private sector housing. Private sector housing is all of the housing in Sedgemoor, Taunton Deane and West Somerset including owner occupation, private rented sector and housing association properties. Magna is an example of a housing association. We also seek to improve access to decent affordable housing by encouraging the owners of empty properties to bring these much needed homes back into occupation.

Private sector housing can be broken down into three distinct areas:

  • Housing standards in the private rented sector and grants. A range of up to date information and advice to assist landlords in renting out properties and houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) which comply with the relevant legislation. Accredited Landlords in Somerset which is a free voluntary scheme to promote good practice and improve standards of management in the private rented sector. There is also information on empty property low cost loans and how to bring properties back into use.
  • Home maintenance, grants and advice. This includes information on the range of grants and advice the council can offer home owners to maintain their properties.
  • Disabled Facilities Grants and household adaptations. Advice for people wishing to apply for a disabled facilities grant, or wishing to apply on someone's behalf.

The partnership also works with Ridgeway Care & Repair. Ridgeway offer a client-focused service to help elderly and disabled people make household repairs, improvements or adaptations in order to retain and promote independent living. For more information click on Ridgeway Care and Repair.
