Buildings often fall into disuse or disrepair and are demolished to either make way for new developments or to remove a danger or eyesore. Persons wishing to demolish buildings in excess of approximately 50 cubic metres are required to give 6 weeks notification in writing, under Section 80 Notice of the Building Act 1984. A standard notice is obtainable from the Building Control Section. The return Section 81 Notice of the Building Act 1984 will then ensure that conditions are set for the following:
- the statutory undertakers are notified (water, electricity, gas, etc), neighbouring residents are informed.
Any person who contravenes subsection 2 of Section 80 of the Building Act 1984 is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale.
