Swine Flu

In conjunction with the other district councils in Somerset and the county council we have plans in place to cope in the event of pandemic influenza (flu).

West Somerset Council is committed to a process of business continuity management in respect of its services to the community posed by the threat of pandemic influenza.

The Council have plans in place to help ensure an effective response in the event of a flu pandemic. However, at present there is no need for these plans to be put into action.  Please look at the attached important infomation about Swine Flu (under Related Documents).

The current situation

Cases of Influenza A Virus (H1N1) or Swine Flu have been confirmed in a number of countries starting in Mexico.  More information can be found on the World Health Organisation website (under External Links).

What to do

It is important that everyone does their bit and takes responsibility for preparing and protecting themselves and their families.
There are a few simple steps you can take to help prevent catching colds and flu such as:

  • covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible
  • throw away used tissues as soon as possible
  • regularly wash your hands with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus
  • cleaning hard surfaces (eg door handles and worktops) frequently using a normal cleaning product
