Climate Change
Climate change has been identified as a priority for West Somerset Council in its Corporate Strategy. It provides the authority with major opportunities to:
- reduce CO2 emissions by ensuring that all our assets are as energy efficient as possible. This will help to reduce our running costs and result in lower energy demands.
- work with partners to develop and prepare adaptation plans for future climate change and extreme weather events in the district.
Through the Carbon Management Plan, the council will take steps to establish sound working practices to sustain our precious environment, and act as an example to the wider community.
The council’s Climate Change Strategy shows how the council works in partnership with other organisations and the public to help reduce the district’s carbon footprint.
Through the strategy practical actions that are tailored to the area’s needs, can be implemented. The actions aim to cut carbon consumption across the district and save residents money.
The strategy also helped to secure over £2 million pounds of Local Action for Rural Communities (LARC) funding. This enables local businesses and community groups to reduce carbon consumption and make Western Somerset more sustainable by providing grant funding.
