Equality and Diversity

West Somerset Council is committed to ensuring equality of opportunity in all its activities, both as an employer and a service provider, and seeks to redress unfair and unlawful discrimination either directly or indirectly on the grounds of race, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation or religion.

Providing our services and employment opportunities in an equal way does not mean treating everybody in the same way. It means that we recognise and value difference and respect our staff and service users as individuals.

We therefore strive to provide our services and employment opportunities in ways that meet people’s needs in a positive way, and ensure that everyone is treated with respect and dignity and therefore improve the quality of life for people living in West Somerset.

The Council has developed and agreed its first comprehensive equality scheme in 2009. The Equality Scheme sets out how we will eliminate discrimination and promote equality. The scheme is built from consultation and feedback from staff and communities of interest wherever this has been possible.
